When you select a new character for your group, you can choose among many candidates. In the dialog box you'll see, keep pressing the “Reroll” button until you see someone that satisfies you. The dialog lists many attributes of the character, and the manual explains all of them. For a Fighter you should concentrate on high Strength and high Hit points. A good Stamina and Dexterity don't hurt.
